The Hope Relief and Orphans Children Village Lugeye.

 Volunteers Wanted

https://www.givingway.com/organization/the-hope-relief-and-orphans-children-village-organization/?context=apply

Location mwanza region  Magu District -Tanzania – at lugeye village.

Background

Hope Relief and Orphans Village Magu is a Community Based Organization that specializes in helping the most vulnerable children (orphans) to all groups of vulnerable children ranging from young adults to mature adults. The CBO is the first of its kind to be launched in Tanzania. The CDO started in 2014 after realising the widening skills gaps that exist between employers /general life needs and what is taught at the schools and colleges.  The developed skills training program will enable disadvantaged children to succeed at everything in life. This is a one stop success centre that created opportunities and empower orphans to remove their success obstacles.

Life skills are one of the critical elements for orphans to succeed in today’s challenging environment. Althoughpeople s’ around the world are more and more likely to pursue formal education, upon graduationthey often find that they are not adequately prepared for the world of work or other challenging life ahead. This is because skills relevant to key growthsectors of the modern economy specifically “soft” skills – are often not covered in traditional educationsystems.  Employers and Society in general often find a “skills mismatch” between the competencies youth adults need to succeed in the workplace and general life, and those they actually possess. This is a critical challenge for today’s youth adults.

The skills mismatch has continued to grow with globalization and as many countries transition to a more service-oriented economy. Employers and society in general are finding that regardless of their level of education, most orphans lack communication, organizational and prioritization skills such as goals setting, decision making and communication. Entry-level employees/business people in many emerging markets may be technically overqualified, but lack teamwork and interpersonal skills, making collaboration with colleagues and problem-solving between team members difficult.

Some of the best university such as Harvard and Wharton have produced technically best students who struggled to succeed in their  employment or daily life due to lack of life skills. One key approach to overcomingthis challenge is through the provision of life skills training to young adults and adults to enable them to succeed in their whatever they want to succeed in life, whether is employment, business or political arena Research has indicated that young adults or adults who go through live skills training has more than 70% of succeeding in life compared to the one who did not.

Description of life skills

Hope Relief and Orphans Village Magu is designed to help participants harness and hone their innate talents and skills while developing new skills. The result is an individual who carries a powerful skillset that can help him or her navigate through life successfully at every turn. Young adults in particular aren’t always as prepared for self-sufficient living as they could be, and life skills training help to smooth over any rough edges that exist in a person’s skillset.

This is a comprehensive behaviour change approach that concentrates on the development of the skills needed for life such as communication, decision–making, thinking, managing emotions, assertiveness, self–esteem building, resisting peer pressure, relationship skills etc.  It addresses the development of the whole individual—so that a person will have the skills to make use of all types of information. Life skills enable individuals to deal effectively with the demands and challenges of everyday life,”

Why Life Skills

Life skills have shown to improve young adult’s chances of succeeding in their life by more than 70%. Some of the benefits of attending life skills trainings at Mafanikio Academy are:

•         Improved economic outcomes for participants -Life skills programs have been shown to increase the earning potential of people in employment, business and political life.

•         Improve education outcomes for people:Recent research has demonstrated that when people are provided interventions that include non-academic supports in social-cognitive skills, learning outcomes improve as do completion/graduation rates.

•         Increase employer satisfaction with new hires:Life skills programs strengthen young people’s abilities in many areas that employers consider particularly important when hiring new employees. Employers often report a higher level of satisfaction with entry-level employees who have gone through life skills training than those who have not.

•         Change personal behaviour and social attitudes of youth:Life skills programs allow people to create a life plan and equip them with the skills to take steps toward achieving their goals.

•         Increase people’s well-being and help them to develop into active and productive members of their communities.

•         Leads to high productivity through improved performance, enables independent living, relating to others, self-care, professional development and positive self – esteem etc.

The most common length of volunteering is 3 months, as this amount of time will allow you to get comfortable with your new life and have a deeper understanding of what it means to live and serve in Tanzania. We have experienced that long-term trips can be more challenging but at the same time can make a significant and long-lasting change in your life. If they wish, long-term volunteers can choose to work at multiple placements during their stay.

In order to effectively experience the local life in Tanzania, you will be placed in a local African family into the village or near townshipdepending on the location of our program implemented. You will be considered as part of the family, and as such you will have to follow the rules that the family sets. These rules are also put in place to ensure your maximum safety during your stay. As part of the fee that you will pay prior to your arrival, the CBO/family will provide you shelter and meals. Although we do not recommend it, there is also the option of staying in the village lodge or volunteer house which will be found by TEHDSO.

Finally, the volunteers/interns will be ready to start his/her adventure! If you are volunteering at the village, the program coordinator will bring you to your host CBO/family and will show you your program and meet by a member of your program at your destination.

Drinks (alcohol) , cigarette and other personal expenses are not included into the cost.

Here is a breakdown of how the money you pay for your volunteer or internship program is spent:

 8.1 Host CBOs/ family

TEHDSO works in collaboration with various CBOs or groups for implementation of our programs which located in rural villages. These partnering CBO/groups don’t have a reliable source of funding and often have extremely limited infrastructures. In order to facilitate this, TEHDSO pays a weekly allowance to the host CBO/family you will be living with. The CBO/family will provide you shelter and 3 meals a day.

This includes airport pickup and drop-off (for international volunteer/intern) as well as transfers to and from the program site. This does not include any transport you will need during your free time.

The salaries that our employees receive ensure that we can provide high quality personal assistance prior to the volunteers'/interns arrivals and 24/7 support once they are in the country.

 8.4 Program Contribution

All TEHDSO partner programs are completely independent non-profit CBOs, which don’t have a reliable source of funding and often have extremely limited infrastructures. TEHDSO include a contribution to the placement chosen by the volunteer/intern, which can help it to continue growing and developing.

8.5 Volunteer/Intern arrival and orientation

In order for the volunteer/intern to adjust to the new environment, he/she will spend the first two nights at a hotel near our office. During the first week of volunteer/intern arrival, he/she will receive two days of orientation that will include an overview of the organizations structure and leadership, resources, day-to-day office operations, expectations/outcome and introduction to Government officials, given basic knowledge of Swahili including a grammar book and of the country habits and rules. Finally, the volunteers/interns will be ready to start his/her adventure! If you are volunteering at the village, the program coordinator will bring you to your host CBO/family and will show you your program and meet by a member of your program at your destination.

10.0 SOME INTERESTING PLACES VOLUNTEER/INTERN COULD VISIT

10.1    Serengeti National Park

Serengeti National Park, in northern Tanzania, is known for its massive annual migration of wildebeest and zebra. Seeking new pasture, the herds move north from their breeding grounds in the grassy southern plains. Many cross the marshy western corridor’s crocodile-infested Grumeti River. Others veer northeast to the Lobo Hills, home to black eagles. Black rhinos inhabit the granite outcrops of the Moru Kopjes. The Serengeti ecosystem is a world-renowned natural landscape. The Great Migration of the wildebeest, zebras and Thomson's gazelles is the largest ungulate migration on earth. With resilient populations of predators and iconic wildlife such as elephants, giraffes and rhinos, that make the Park listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

10.2    Saanane Island National Park

Saanane Island National Park is a Tanzanian national park in Mwanza. The park is located on an island in Lake Victoria and can be reached by boat in about 10 minutes, from the TANAPA offices on Capri Point in Mwanza town . Saanane makes for an excellent day trip in Mwanza if you have the time. It is the smallest of the national parks. If you want a fun walking safari with some excellent up close photography opportunities this is a good choice. Here you will see all the animals on the island: zebras, wildebeests, vervets, gazelle, and crocodiles and lions in an enclosure. If you want a nice walking safari that last about 3-4 hours, this is a good choice!.

10.3    Sukuma Museum, Bujora Cultural Centre-Kisesa Mwanza Tanzania

Exercising the “self-enclosure” and classification of the museum institution, the Sukuma Museum provides the visitor with a representation of Sukuma life. As you move through the museum, you are able to walk past and inside structures of traditional Sukuma history. The installations of the Museum are thematically organized with all facets of “traditional” Sukuma life represented: the royal, the sacred and the quotidian. The museum visitor is able to visit a representation of a traditional Sukuma house and compound, the thatched dwellings of a Sukuma blacksmith, a replica of a traditional doctor’s house and a Royal Pavilion for Sukuma royal history and Dance Society Pavilion for the history of Sukuma dance. Prominently situated at the far end of the compound, the Bujora Church is placed on the crest of the hill that overlooks the entire grounds and surrounding area of Lake Victoria.

10.4    Mwalimu J.K Nyerere Museum- Butiama village Mara Tanzania

Julius Nyerere, the first President of Tanzania, was born in the otherwise insignificant little town of Butiama. This small museum inside the family compound celebrates his life and work. It contains a few stools, shields and other gifts he was given. Boxes of Nyerere’s personal effects, including his diaries, a handwritten Swahili translation of part of Plato’s Republic and collections of his poetry, are also here. Although these are not on display, you can ask the staff to see them. In the family compound next to the museum you can see his two homes, still occupied by his wife and son; his father’s house; and the graves of Nyerere and his parents. His mother’s house, where he was born, along with the houses of his father’s 21 other wives no longer exist.

The museum itself is only really worth a visit for dedicated Nyerere fans, but the journey to the town and the interest your presence will generate is fun. You can spend the night and immerse yourself in the culture of the local tribes with singing, dancing, a trip to the market and a visit to a traditional healer. The place can be reachable through dalla-dallas(Communal transport) to Butiama (Tsh2500, two hours) from Musoma at Price museum of Tsh 6500, homes Tsh4000 from Hours 8am-5.30pm

10.5    Lukuba Island- Mara Tanzania

While at Musoma, don’t forget to arrange a trip to a small island –Lukuba Island “tropical natural paradise” in Lake Victoria, the second largest fresh water lake in the world (1134 meters asl), about 45 minutes to the west Musoma. The place where you can make your trip unforgettable.
