Seaweed Farming
Seaweed is an important component of the marine ecosystem along with the mangrove and coral reefs and can be viewed in two perspectives, from its ecological value as well as its economic uses.
Seaweed farming used to be an alternative livelihood in some villages along the Mtawara coast areas. In Tanzania context, seaweed is now emerging to be an important and major livelihood in the coastal areas, especially in the Zanzbar, Tanga, Kilwa, Lindi as well as now in Mtwara.
Environmentally, Seaweed farming helps to preserve coral reefs,by increasing diversity where the algae and seaweed have been introduced and it also provides added niche for local species of fish and invertebrates. Farming may be beneficial by increasing the production of herbivorous fishes and shellfish in the area.
Seaweed culture can also be used to capture, absorb, and eventually incorporate excessive nutrients into living tissue. "Nutrient bioextraction" is the preferred term for bioremediation involving cultured plants and animals. Nutrient bioextraction (also called bioharvesting) is the practice of farming and harvesting shellfish and seaweed for the purpose of removing nitrogen and other nutrients from natural water bodies.
On understanding these benefits, KIMWAM in collaboration with Seacology is committed to work in supporting local commuinty seaweed growers in Mtwara to insure the sector contributes not only to economical growth but also environmentally. Above images shows KIMWAM Officers inspecting Seaweeding faming at Mkungu Village.

Living in Morogoro - Tanzania
Rent: The cost of living in Morogoro – Tanzania is relatively low. We will be happy to help you find accommodation/hostel and make suggestions to you; however, you are responsible for finding your own dwelling.
Depending on the type of accommodation that you are seeking (furnished, unfurnished, sharing or not), you should expect to pay anywhere between $130.00-$ 195USD a month.
Food: There is a vegetable and fruit market that sells affordable food for you to prepare yourself. On average, spent a minimum of $125.00 a month (if you prepared food yourself) If you buy a lot of imported food or canned food,(e.g. peanut butter, cake mix, canned fruits, olive oil, Quinoa, etc.),you can expect to pay slightly higher prices than you would back home, which will also increase your food expenses. If you anticipate going out to restaurants frequently you can easily double your expenses. A meal at a restaurant (depending on the restaurant quality) can range between US$2.50-20.
Morogoro would be a fairly scruffy town were it not for its verdant setting at the foot of the Uluguru Mountains, which brood over the landscape from the south. The surrounding area is one of the country’s breadbaskets, home to the prestigious Sokoine University (Tanzania’s national agricultural institute), and a major educational and mission station. While there are few attractions, Morogoro offers a good introduction to Tanzanian life outside Dar es Salaam, plus the chance for cultural tours and hikes in the nearby Uluguru.
Tour to Mikumi National Park
Mikumi National Park
This is Tanzania’s fourth-largest national park, and the most accessible from Dar es Salaam. With almost guaranteed year-round wildlife sightings, Mikumi makes an ideal safari destination for those without much time. Within its 3230 sq km – set between the Uluguru Mountains to the northeast, the Rubeho Mountains to the northwest and the Lumango Mountains to the southeast – Mikumi hosts buffaloes, wildebeests, giraffes, elephants, lions, zebras, leopards, crocodiles and more, and chances are high that you’ll see a respectable sampling of these within a short time of entering the park.
The most reliable wildlife watching is around the Mkata floodplain, to the northwest of the main road, with the open vistas of the small but lovely Millennium ('Little Serengeti') area a highlight. This area is especially good for spotting buffaloes – often quite near the roadside – as well as giraffes, elephants and zebras. Another attraction: the Hippo Pools, just northwest of the main entry gate, where you can watch hippos wallowing and snorting at close range, plus do some fine birding.
Mikumi is an important educational and research centre. Among the various projects being carried out is an on-going field study of yellow baboons, which is one of just a handful of such long-term primate studies on the continent.
To the south, Mikumi is contiguous with Selous Game Reserve. Hopefully, apart of volunteering into MOREPEO you will have a golden opportunity to visit our beautiful national park.
Mikumi National Park provides great safari experience regardless of the time you have in Morogoro town. Tours are tailor made to suit your interest, budget and time but also Our organization will provide a car for your tour if required . Trips are in small groups of up to 7 persons . In Mikumi expect to see wild animals such as Lions, Buffalos, Giraffe, Wildebeest, Zebras, Impalas, Warthogs, elephants, hippos and more than 300 bird species. Upon arrival in Morogoro you will be taken back to your residence and that will be the end of your day trip.
Mikumi National Park lies on the Northern border of Africa's biggest game reserve - the Selous, and is transected by the road between Dar Es Salaam and Iringa. It is the most accessible part of a 75,000 square kilometer track of wilderness that stretches east almost as far as the Indian Ocean.
Activities includes but not limited to wildlife viewing safaris, camping safaris, walking safaris and night safaris. Explore Mikumi and the Udzungwa Mountain National Parks on this multi-day option tour. The tour takes you on game drives, where you'll see wild exotic animals, and on both a walking safari in Mikumi and a trekking/climbing safari adventure in Udzungwa. Enjoy this tour in a small group or privately. Price includes transfers, game drives, park entry fees, trekking guide fees, 2 nights accommodation, and all meals and refreshments.
