MAJOR ACHIEVEMENTS SINCE 2000
Since 2000 the organization has achieved a number of successes in its mission and vision including that, in the villages where we have been working both in Magu and Kwimba,Busega,Bariadi,Meatu,Itilima and Maswa districts the village that had high rate of killings of older women due to witch craft allegations the killings have gone down by more than 80%
Analysis of information from the Witchcraft Killings Monitoring forms (WKMF) shows that witchcraft killings and threatening letters to older women have been reduced significantly.
- NABROHO is indicating impressive successes and is gradually creating an environment in which women, especially older women, can exercise their civil and political rights.
- Community institutions and duty bearers, older people’s structures, and community members are progressively taking more active roles in the organization projects and their attitudes towards older women are gradually changing and becoming more positive. This has been reflected in the reduction of witchcraft killings and threatening letters sent to older women in the project areas, inclusion of international day of older persons in district local councils’ Annual events calendar, allocation of funds targeting issues affecting older persons in their budgets and Plans
- In the 15 villages that the organization has already worked with, community development plans are reflecting awareness rising and the rights protection activities, there is meetings involving government leaders and other stakeholders are including discussions on the rights of older women. Moreover, as a result of organization’s activities, village and ward development plans are reflecting budget allocations to respond to the needs of older people and OVCs.
- In the villages that the organization has been implementing different Projects of human women rights, older women's knowledge of their civil and political rights has improved
- and there are already changes in gender relationships between men and women in terms of sharing productive roles, reducing the workload for women in the home, promoting greater ownership of resources for women and increased participation of women in other developmental activities.
- The organization through Sukumaland Older women’s rights Project has also seen increased confidence and strengthened leadership capacities of women which have led to them being recognized as equal development players. Moreover, the organization has also made gains in promoting women’s rights to enjoy adequate living conditions and reducing their vulnerability to rights abuses by constructing shelter. The community members have followed this example by taking the initiative to identify and repair houses of other vulnerable older women. These initiatives are a signal of community acceptance of older people and recognition of their responsibility to protect them.
- The capacities of our volunteer staff are improving making them more able to campaign for the rights of older women and challenge witchcraft accusations. Experience and annual organization performance assessment indicates that there has been a significant improvement in volunteers staff knowledge on rights and HIV/AIDS related issues, and organizational development areas including strategic planning, fundraising, training of trainers, financial management ,monitoring and evaluation and advocacy of media coverage of older women's rights issues
- Increase in the number of inheritance cases presented by women to the organization’s Paralegals who are almost found in every village in the wards that we have been implementing different rights programs, resulting in women keeping or regaining their Properties
- The coverage of organization activities has gradually increased from one ward in 2000 years to five districts by the year 2015, from only three volunteer staff in 2000 to 10 by year 2015.
