APCCC enters Partnership with ARCOS to Conserve Biodiversity in Kagera River Basin, Tanzania.

Immense degradation of the riparian landscape of Kagera River has become significant threat to biodiversity in the river basin itself, and in Lake Victoria where the river discharges its headwaters. High population density (estimated at 248 people/sq km) has caused loss of vast areas of wetlands, natural forest and grasslands to human settlements, farming, charcoal burning and seasonal fires, which has led to an enormous loss of biodiversity.Image may be NSFW.

Land degradation has also aggravated soil erosion, river sedimentation (estimated at 21.4 ton/km²/year - Myanza et al, 2005), and nutrient loading; leading to decline of water quality, eutrophication, invasion of hyacinth, algae and de-oxygenation of water, which is also a threat to biodiversity in the terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems of the river basin and Lake Vitoria.

APCCC has entered a partnership with Albertine Rift Conservation society (ARCOS) to mitigate biodiversity loss in Kagera River Basin through sustainable land use planning and restoration of biodiversity in degraded riparian areas of Missenyi District.
