ABOUT US:
Counselling And Family Life Organization (CAFLO) is a non-profit, non-political, voluntary, non-governmental organization (NGO). Established in June 2006 by Emmanuel Ngazi and Denis Mikongoty, CAFLO received its legal national level registration (Registration No. 00NGO/1900) from the Tanzanian government in February 2007 to operate out of Dar es Salaam and throughout the Tanzanian mainland.
Emmanuel grew up in a rural-urban area observing several orphans and vulnerable children living in the streets and other risky environments. Seeing this first hand every day, it inspired him to make a difference in the lives of these children. Through like-minded mentors and education, he began looking at the root causes of children living on the streets and how to make foundational changes to prevent these problems at their core. As a teenager, Emmanuel worked in a group focused on providing support and services to orphans and vulnerable children. Denis was the son of a doctor and a teacher and spent his childhood working with his parents to support their neighbors in the community suffering from HIV/AIDS. They would bring Denis along on their outreach projects to directly teach him the best approaches to help these vulnerable people. Motivated by the efforts and education of his parents, he used these skills later in life to work with programs focused on HIV/AIDS education and support.
Seeing the living conditions and the lack of support for the vulnerable people of their communities first hand, both Emmanuel and Denis were motivated to direct their careers into the field of social-work to help people in vulnerable positions gain a better quality of life. They met in a social-work training course for behavior changes and HIV prevention in 2004. While working together in the field, they observed a gap in the services provided and the needs of the community. Coming together through teamwork and mutual objectives, CAFLO was born. Starting out in an office space barely big enough to fit two desks, CAFLO has now grown to have programs in the fields of rural outreach, research, counselling, youth action, capacity building, human rights and health care. The current office houses a kids’ play and education room, a room dedicated to creative projects, an area specifically set aside for TB patients, and an administrative office. They chose to locate the main office within the rural-urban community to be easily accessible to those most in need. Working from the office and in the field regularly, CAFLO directly influences community members to instill changes to better their lives and create sustainable development within the community.
VISION:
We envision a vibrant society of people living peacefully, healthily and with a better quality of life through education, socio-economic development and respecting human rights.
MISSION:
CAFLO’s mission is to promote peace, health and socio-economic development in families and communities by empowering people to overcome challenges facing them such as disease (e.g. HIV/AIDS, STDs, TB, Malaria), poverty/unemployment, malnourishment, physical and mental handicaps, gender inequalities, domestic violence, child abuse, drug/alcohol abuse, sexual abuse and illegal trafficking. We accomplish these goals through counselling, education and teamwork promoting sustainable changes.
STRATEGIC OBJECTIVES:
1. To strengthen counselling services and provide quality psycho-social support to children, families, those in vulnerable positions and the community at large.
2. To participate in the efforts and campaign against the spread of disease, drug/alcohol abuse, child abuse, domestic violence, gender based inequalities and promiscuous sex through advocating fundamental behavior changes.
3. To foster family and socio-economic development by empowering youth to further their education and providing capacity skills training opportunities for the most impoverished.
4. To advocate for equal rights for widows, youths, orphans, the disabled and others in vulnerable positions.
5. To cooperate effectively with national and international partnerships, government institutions and faith-based organizations in overcoming the aforementioned issues.
ORGANIZATION RATIONALE AND TARGET POPULATION:
Tanzania is East Africa’s most populated country (nearly 45 million) with about 75% of the population living in rural areas (2012 Population and Housing Census). Our main office is located directly within the rural-urban community (Ilala district, Dar es Salaam) in order to be as accessible as possible to those who need the most help. Our efforts target the most vulnerable and impoverished, with a strong focus on children, youth and women. We provide support through community outreach projects, counselling, education, advocating health, campaigning for human rights and fostering economic wellbeing through capacity skills education for self-reliability resulting in improved quality of life and sustainable community changes.
