BRIQUETTES AS AN ALTERNATIVE ENERGY FOR COOKING AND HEATING
The Energy and Environment Partnership Programme in Southern and East Africa (EEP S&EA)was established in 2009 to address a broad range of issues and barriers that hamper the promotion of renewable energy technologies. Limited access to modern, affordable and reliable energy services and the associated negative social and economic impacts were the main reasons for establishment of the EEP.
The aim was to increase the usage of renewable energy technologies and promote energy efficiency. In turn, this would help reduce poverty and negative environmental externalities, such as greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and indoor air pollution, as well as effectively contribute to the millennium development goals (MDGs).
According to a research by “Sauti zetu” Tanzania destructively burns one million tons of charcoal each year, which amounts to clearing more than 300 hectares (about 750 acres) of forest every day to produce charcoal. Unfortunately, the rate of deforestation surpasses the replacement rate by about 3 to 1. This means that, for every acre planted, three are lost. This horrendous destruction is confirmed by the fact that a charcoal maker has to use between 30-40 trees to make one mould (furnace) that would produce 15-20 bags of charcoal. Due to inefficiencies in the production of charcoal, large portions of the charcoal gets pulverized in the process and are left unused
The rapidly disappearing forest resources and expensive hydro power we need an absolute answer for this ever-growing energy demand for cooking and heating purposes. It is in this context, ADF has the solution which will be the best way of preserving our forests and environment
