1.0 Main objectives.
Improving environment through protecting and restoring natural biodiversity for social economic sustainability.
1.1 Specific Objective.
- Management of the wetlands coupled with creation of new and artificial wetlands
- Awareness creation to the marginalized communities
- Formation of Village environmental committees (VECs)
- Formulation of participatory community workshops on ecological sanitati
- Empowering rural communities in things related to environmental auditing.
- Capacity Building for fisher folks so as to manage marine resources in a sustainable manner.
2.0. ACTIVITIES
- Capacity building and Awareness rising.
- To conduct seminars on environmental audit and restoration.
- To combat environmental pollution and degradation throughpeoples involvement and participation.
- Conduct a research on environmental climatical change versus environmental protection and conservation.
- Safari visit to projects that are related.
- Monitoring and evaluation
3.0 ACTIVITIES AND ADVOCACY:
Introductory seminars, workshops, meetings to the leadership, informal operators and grass root communities – inform them of the project in question to take place.
To organize and conduct participatory seminars/workshops to the general communities, with gender bias, where as SECCA will be playing facilitation roles.
To organize and conduct participatory training sessions to the industrial owners, where as, as usual SECCA’s expertise will be playing the roles of a facilitator.
To organize and conduct participatory seminars in which the VECs will be identified with gender bias, the VECs will be empowered to do things of their concerned, grass root communities will be taking the leads in project planning, monitoring, implementation and decision making.
To organize participatory monitoring and evaluation in which field visits and review process will be conducted to identify the success and failures in project development.
To conduct project report writing and information dissemination for project functions, policies and businesses.
To carry out research analysis on environmental degradation and impacts on the livelihoods of local people.
4.0 FUNDING VISION:
The common funding vision and relationship is to “Develop and appreciate policies and strategies for the desirable management of environment of Lake Victoria and to Improve livelihoods of the people in the lake zone
To link the riparian communities with institutions that would assist in a forestation programmes.
By its design SECCA will involve CBOs around the wetland, youth groups and local communities in it’s implementation through capacity building training and advocacy formation of VECs. This will ensure ownership that will lead to sustainability.
5.0. CHALLENGES:
1. Low level of voluntary spirit leading to high cost of operational costs.
2. Lack of proper organization of civic groups working on the Lake Victoria Basin wetlands.
3. Wetland environmental aspects.
4. Scarily of resources to meet the actual project and other operational costs.
6.0 WEAKNESS.
1. Meager financial resources to spearhead extensive creation of awareness.
2. Little progress in identifying and working with partners.
3. Lack of Training in community capacity building
4. Lack of enough working facilities.
7.0 APPROACHES.
1. Participatory and consultative process with grass root communities on things related to decision making, planning and evaluation.
2. Gender sensitivity and analysis in programme activities.
3. Bottom up and top down approaches in things concerning decision making.
4. Malt and interdisciplinary approaches in project execution and implementation.
5. Mult scrotal and scrotal approaches in things related to HIV/ AIDS.
6. Grass root communities to take the lead in things of their own concern.
